Fully funded by the Wee Kim Wee Legacy Fund, the Short Overseas Journalism (SOJOURN) practicum exposes students to the challenge of reporting in an overseas setting.
During pre-departure meetings, students learn about the destination, plan their stories and assist in making arrangements for their trip. The field trip of four to seven days involves intensive reporting, briefings and site visits.
Students on the SOJOURN programme travel, see, taste and experience for the reader rather than for themselves, while empathising with and understanding the people and the culture of the country they visit – countries as diverse as Vietnam and North Korea. Articles written by students returning from North Korea were published in a special weekend section of The Straits Times.
