Dr Lai Chih-Hui secures grant award from American Red Cross

Assistant Professor Lai Chih-Hui (PrincipaI Investigator) and her team comprising co-Principal Investigators Associate Professor Arul Chib and Professor Rich Ling were awarded a $50,000 grant from the American Red Cross, under the Global Disaster Preparedness Centre (GDPC), for a multi-country project investigating Southeast Asian mobile communication for disaster preparedness. The project collects field data from Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, and the Philippines.

Following GDPC’s initiative of developing flood hazard preparedness mobile apps in the four target countries, the project is expected to help GDPC determine whether Internet-based apps or texting-based messaging systems are more effective in reaching and motivating individuals to engage in preparedness measures. Specifically, the research will examine whether and how individuals in those countries use mobile technologies, along with other sources and channels, factoring in geographic and demographic variations. Insights from the project will provide GDPC with the necessary community- and country-specific parameters in designing the content of the message and selecting the appropriate media platform for message delivery.
