Ms. Wong Pei Wen is a Senior Lecturer at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information where she teaches Writing for Public Relations, Integrated Advertising, Digital and Content Marketing courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Since 2016, Miss Wong also teaches a course that takes students to the Cannes International Festival of Creativity where they are inspired by the best creative work and given opportunities to have their work reviewed by senior creative leaders.
Prior to teaching, Miss Wong’s spent 15 years in the Telecommunications and Technology industry leading marketing communication teams in APAC. In her roles, she oversaw central and in-country marketing, advertising and public relations teams for Fortune 500 companies like O2, Yahoo! and Cisco. A firm believer in connecting students with opportunities outside of the classroom to align with industry expectations, Miss Wong partners with brands and agencies to add a dose of reality to classroom learning. Her latest partnership with Google – NTU Digitize – will expose students to the Google Ad stack and suite of tools on the Google Marketing Platform. Past partnerships include TBWA, Ministry of Transport, Udders, Hock Siong, AirBnb, SGAG, Ogilvy Redworks, Starcom Media Group and Facebook.
Extending her teaching approach outside of the classroom, Miss Wong started an industry outreach initiative for students in 2016. WKWSCI Engage is an outreach initiative to mentor students with leadership potential and connect them with key players in the creative industry, Under WKWSCI Engage, a new committee is selected and formed each year to organize three main activities namely 1) ‘The Big Scoop’, a career information session where seniors advice juniors on internship experiences; 2) Tour de Agencies”, where students go on multiple agency tours to interact and hear from the practitioners themselves and 3) “WKWSCI Engage Thought Leadership Program”, a platform to explore current and emerging topics and create content relevant to the communication industry. The student leaders are advised by the WKWSCI Engage Advisory Council consisting of leaders from the industry as well as Miss Wong.
Awards and Research Interests
In 2015, Miss Wong was awarded the Nanyang Technological University Inaugural John Cheung Award in Teaching for Social Media. She also won the Koh Boon Hwee Educator award for making an impact on a student’s university journey in 2017. In 2019, Miss Wong, along with her co-author, won two awards -the Commendation award and the People’s Choice award - for the NISTH Centre’s AI in Humanity Ideas Challenge. Miss Wong’s research interests is in social media, influencer marketing, digital marketing, crisis communication, online falsehoods, automation in media and technology convergence. She is working on four research projects at the moment in the following areas:
- Media Automation (co-PI)
- Students as Learning Partners (PI)
- Online Falsehoods (co-PI)
- Patient Communication in AI and Automation (PI)
Outside of the School, Pei sits on two committees. She is currently a member of the Advisory Committee for Chinese Programmes (ACCESS) at Media Development Authority of Singapore and a member of the MINDEF Expert Panel for Strategic Communication. She also contributes her opinions on crisis management, corporate communication and social media marketing through commentaries and interviews. During the summer, Miss Wong takes on teaching assignments from time to time, She has taught the Hanyang University Summer Program as well as the Tsing Hua University Summer Program. Both programs were held in Singapore. Miss Wong was also part of a capacity development initiative for Myanmar where she taught pro-bono.
